Artificial Intelligence in Rehabilitation and Physiatry

Inevitably, artificial intelligence will improve our life quality in one way or another. Rehabilitation and physiatry is another area of healthcare in which these new technologies have been involved. The machine learning models deployed, help specialists in this sector in terms of new treatments, injury detection and recovery.
In Spain new models of sensors and virtual reality are being implemented. In Barcelona, at the Intensive This 360° model combines virtual reality with physical exercise, making the patient pedal even if they are bedridden, thus enabling them to begin their recovery.
On the other hand, the project with researchers from the ONCE University School of Physiotherapy, together with researchers from the Engineering Research Institute of Aragon and students of Health Sciences of the University of Zaragoza, allows the easy diagnosis of low back pain, by detecting movement patterns and identifying biomechanical factors to treat pain in a personalized way through the design of algorithms and the use of sensors. The name of this project is TeleEDxPhysio. One of its objectives is to transfer the results to tele-rehabilitation platforms, such as HEFORA -a platform already used in Aragon-. The sensors with Artificial Intelligence applied are intended to help the physiotherapist with the diagnosis and treatment of their patients.
These models are carried out not only to help prevent injuries, but also to improve the performance of athletes. These new technologies provide accuracy that a human eye could miss. In Spain, Carlo Jesús Vallejos Pongo, a student of Artificial Intelligence Applied to Sport, carried out a project in which he developed a model that can predict in order to identify points on the human body and detect movements with their correct positions so that the patient does not force too much and performs the exercises properly.
Undoubtedly, Artificial Intelligence will help patients with motor difficulties, brain injuries, athletes, among others, improve their quality of life and also have an impact in record time.
